Creating a Graphic Novel: Beginning To End

I came up with THINGS UNDONE when I was busily working on THE OVERMAN. The amount of work was enormous and I lived and breathed it everyday for 2 years. So naturally I sought out a form of escapism. With the rise in popularity of zombies I wanted to create a story that actually made sense to me. How could I relate to being a zombie. I just looked inward and THINGS UNDONE was waiting.

First though, I came up with a logo that I could wrap my head around. This in my mind makes it real and official. Immediately one starts believing in the project and branding everything with it. Once that’s out of the way I make sure the story is bullet-proof before moving on to development art.

A lot of decisions get made along the way. I know for one that since it was based in Seattle I wanted to have a rocker kind of poster look to the book. Just something that felt punk/young and simple to execute. Kind of DIY culture. The hardest thing other than nailing down characters and their silhouettes is the cover. It’s your one shot to pull people in. I still like the above cover but the publisher thought it necessary to make it even simpler. This was the final cover that we went with. I guess it was for the better otherwise the last three projects would have had a character coming out you with some kind of weapon.

Still…this just feels much too passive for my tastes. I should add too that sometimes in the dev art phase I’ll create a bunch of inspiration art to be used later for marketing purposes. But at the end of the day, this is the process I pretty much follow every time I start on a graphic novel or comic project. It’s simple and straight-forward but it keeps me going in the right direction.

RE:Visitation

As I’ve been putting together my new site I realized there were a lot of pages from THE OVERMAN that were kind of cool as stand-alone illustrations. These are a few of my favorite ones.
